Oil & gas companies are finding it increasingly difficult to meet reserve and production growth targets without new tools and new approaches to geoscience. To address this challenge, ION's GX Technology group (GXT) developed geologically-inspired, geologically-constrained programs known as SPANS.

SPANS are basin-wide, ultradeep, seismic data libraries that were acquired and imaged using the most advanced geological and geophysical technology available. SPANS are custom designed to provide critical insight into the geologic evolution, deep basin architecture, and depositional and structural history of a petroleum system. The resulting data provides oil & gas companies with new information, insights, and prospect generation opportunities for under-explored or unexplored, frontier basins.
Unlike typical multi-client “speculative” (spec) data libraries, all SPAN programs are customized to image over an entire petroleum system and look deep within the geologic section to identify areas of highest prospectivity. Each line section is jointly selected with a team of expert regional geologists, the underwriting oil & gas companies, and ION to overlay with areas of structural or stratigraphic interest. Once the program's objectives have been set, our Integrated Seismic Solutions team manages the project and applies the best survey design, acquisition, and processing technologies with a proprietary mindset to ensure value-added, fit-for-purpose results.
Each SPAN dataset is delivered with an Interpretation Report that provides new perspectives on regional play-types and prospect opportunities for the clients involved.
SPANS deliver insights that help to quantify and manage risk factors and identify more drillable prospects, including:
- Source rock distribution
- Regional sediment fairways
- Migration pathways from source to reservoir
- Identification of deeper targets
- Higher resolution images of shallower targets, with enhanced definition of faults and salt sheets
